TOP 5 MOST DURABLE FLOORING OPTIONS FOR YOUR HOME

When choosing a new flooring for your home, durability is high up the list of priorities for most people.

Sure, you want a flooring choice that looks good, but if it’s ruined within a year or so by foot traffic and playing family members, it will be poor quality.

So, what are the five most durable flooring options that will also look stunning in your home? Read on to find out once and for all!

1. Luxury vinyl tiles or planks

Robust, waterproof, stain and scratch-resistant, and available in a range of colours, designs, and textures – luxury vinyl tile (LVT) or plank is a very durable and an excellent choice for almost every room in the home.

Luxury vinyl is made of multiple compressed layers, with a transparent, protective coating on top. This makes it easy to colour and design while remaining soft to walk on.

It is also likely to last for decades, can be laid quickly and simply, and is incredibly easy to clean – just run a broom or the vacuum around, mop it, and you are done.

For communal spaces, like the kitchen, living room, or hallways, why not choose a wood or stone-inspired design? You can create a timeless and sophisticated aesthetic without the upkeep.

For bedrooms, although it may seem like a more unorthodox choice, LVTs hardwearing nature and range of designs make it a dream to match with soft furnishings, like rugs, which can make spaces feel serene and cosy.

Especially with luxury vinyl brands like Polyflor Camaro.

2. Hardwood flooring

Classically elegant and easy to clean, hardwood flooring is well-known to be durable and long-lasting.

It’s also timeless and goes with any décor style, allowing you to express your personality through your interior design and furniture choices – even if they change over the years.

But did you know that hardwood flooring can be very expensive and needs to be refinished every 10 years to keep looking its best and performing well?

This will mean sanding the wood down and applying a new coat of varnish – something that is time-consuming, messy, and sure to disrupt your daily life.

3. Carpet

Perhaps the most popular option for domestic properties is carpet –  we love it in the UK.

And it’s not hard to see why, available in a range of colours and styles, soft and warm underfoot, and giving a level of acoustic protection, carpet does seem to be king.

However, with more strenuous cleaning requirements, thanks to its ability to trap hair and debris and an increased potential for staining or wearing out in high-traffic areas, it may be best to limit carpet to rooms, like bedrooms, that are further from main entrances and exits.

4. Sheet vinyl

If you are on a lower budget but are looking for the benefits of LVT, sheet vinyl flooring is a great choice for the home – especially in areas like kitchens, bathrooms, conservatories, and near main entranceways.

Vinyl flooring sheets can withstand water ingress, stains, and the damage associated with high traffic areas while also feeling warm and soft underfoot.

They are also incredibly simple to install and some brands, like Tarkett vinyl, comes with additional benefits, like acoustic protection – which you might expect only from carpet.

However, this lower price does come with a slightly lower durability when compared to LVT or other luxury vinyl products. For this reason, if well-used, you should expect to replace your sheet vinyl in around 10-15 years.

But as it can cost around half the price of luxury vinyl, that seems a fair trade-off.

5. Linoleum

You may assume that lino is an archaic remnant of the past, but after a dip in popularity between the 1940-1990s, lino is on the way back up!

With a wide range of colours and designs, increased affordability, an easy-to-maintain structure, and some impressive green credentials, linoleum is an excellent option for many homes.

More importantly, however, lino is incredibly hardwearing and with care can last for up to 40 years or more – but be aware that after around 40 years, your lino might start to show its years.

So, perhaps it’s time you gave lino another look!
